From a city that prides itself on music and football, Liverpool product Neil Danns is combining both celebrated arts.
The Crystal palace midfielder's passion for music has seen him step off the football pitch and into the recording studio as he embarks on a journey that will last long after his playing career darkens.
Raised in the unforgiving streets of Toxteth, streets that were decayed and that had surrendered to riots in years previous, Danns always faced a uphill challenge in being able to turn an all so familiar story into a successful one. Cornered by an enviroment who's scenery was crime and poverty, Danns resisted the lure of many around him and focused on a canvas where he was able to paint his life's portrait. Blessed with fabulous athletic ability and an unmatched desire to achieve, his footballing skills were soon under scrutiny as a host of local clubs began showing interest in the Liverpool Livewire. Eventually it was the attention of Blackburn Rovers that flattered Danns most and it was at the Lancashire club where Danns' professional career was concieved.
With first team opportunities hard to come by in an established and successful Blackburn team, Danns relinquished his position within the Rovers squad and grasped a new challenge that was being provided by Colchester United. Despite receiving more attractive offers from bigger clubs, Danns believed the opportunity offered by the Essex outfit would be a chance to showcase his wide repertoire of skills. His decision was proved right.
Danns became an instant hit with the U's fans. His aggressive drive, speedy footwork and eye for goal fired him straight into the hearts of all Colchester fans. Unfortunately for them, this new lease of life was not going un-noticed by rival clubs. After single handedly carrying Colchester to the second tier of English football, several championship clubs began fighting for Danns' signature, this fighting lasted all summer until Birmingham City held off the resolve of Cardiff and Coventry and paraded the midfield powerhouse in front of their expectant fans.
A popular figure with fans of the second city club, Danns found chances in the first team limited despite impressing when selected. He was part of the Birmingham team that won promotion back to the Premiership but once there he found his role in the team restricted and sought a fresher challenge that he could be a part of.
Danns' transfer to Crystal Palace in January 2008 was a move welcomed by both parties. It gave Palace the chance to strengthen their squad as they pursued a play off spot and it enabled him the opportunity to display his ability on a more frequent basis. The move to London also allowed Danns to locate himself in London. The Concrete Garden of UK Music.
Away from the pitch music has always been a passion in Danns' life. A ghetto upbringing meant the promising footballer was never far away from the soundtrack that accompanied his neighbourhood. Identifying artists such as kings of leon, oasis, rod stewart and the late Michael Jackson as his musical rolemodels, Danns hopes he can go a long way in attempting to emulate his heroes as he aims to make his mark in the emerging UK music scene.
Going under the lifelong alias "Dannzy" to differenciate himself from the footballer Neil Danns. Dannzy hopes his versatile understanding of the music business can power himself to be a major player in years to come. His improving production skill, soulful and raspy whisper, and extensive vocabulary ensure Dannzy has the all round tools to announce himself to the UK audience. One has the feeling they will approve.
